My old friend Schmelnoz the Incomprehensible, who is a space alien from the future of an alternate timeline, has never been married. In fact, he didn’t even know what marriage was until I explained it to him. And the reason I had to explain it to him was because he overheard someone using the expression, “She wears the pants in that family!” Of course I also had to explain to him what pants were, and what people mean when they talk about who wears the pants, and how traditionally on earth it has usually been the man who wears the proverbial pants, at least in public anyways as behind closed doors it is quite often a different matter.
Anyway, what he said next has always stuck with me.
He said, “It seems a poor sort of marriage that can only afford one pair of pants.”
And as is generally the case, I couldn’t really argue with him.
